Yes, very messy indeed.
I saw the pictures and how distgusting is that -- come on really pick up the trash.... and the city wonders why we "have such dirty rivers"?
not very appetizing, this place is whack
The only thing messy is the weird people that have moved into Northwest Portland and made it only available to the rich! Leave now please!
you live in a city. pick it up or deal with it--complaining is for children.
spend half the time you do on this stupid blog of yours picking up trash and there'd be no trash.
the only thing more annoying than garbage on the ground is an idiot screaming and pointing at it, TOTALLY unwilling to pick it up himself. file your complaint with the city or whatever but move on. and if it bugs you, get rubber gloves and pick the crap up.

Hi Arby! Thanks for your comments.
I will try to address your points:
1. Yes I do live in a city, the best city in the world. It is clean, the people are friendly, and most of the business owners are very civic minded. I wouldn't live anywhere else! This does not mean you just have to accept everything that comes your way. If this was the attitude here, it wouldn't be the lovely city that it is.
2. I do pick up trash in my neighborhood, but will not do the dirty work for an irresponsible business that I do not wish to succeed or stay in my neighborhood. They need to become a good citizen or get out.
3. I am not going to argue with you about the stupidity of this site, or whether I am an idiot or not - you might be quite right! However, I do take umbrage to you assuming that I am totally unwilling to pick up trash. I am simply unwilling to clean up after a pathologically trashy business. I believe it to be more effective to build awareness of the issue and try to pressure the business to permanently change. This is known as treating the disease rather than the symptoms.
4. I have filed a complaint with the city. It is case number 08-119720-NU
Thanks everyone for the comments, and hopefully this place will clean up its act.
Its funny Arby that you say that complaining is for children. Well I guess then that makes you a child! See: your complaining too. Reread your weak, fruitless post, and you will notice that in your own way you are complaining of people who complain about trash! Your comment brings nothing to the table in any sort of dialogue or discussion format, your ad hominem attacks are useless to this world, we need people who want to listen and argue constructively, who want to take part in the dialectic process of a community-centr ic website, not complaining hypocrites.
Although this example is great to show how lacking 21st garbage control can be, its also very specific . I don't feel that business has a problem, and it usually isn't dirty when I've seen it. But seriously, the pics you took are disgusting. I would be upset as well (especially with Silver Dollar who is consistently MUCH worse).

Silver dollar on 21st, Uptown Silver Dollar, and the Old Pharmacy Cafe all have the same owner... so you can see there is a bit of a pattern here!
Most of the pictures are of the street. It seems that is more of a reflection of the dirty people who live near, around, or frequent NW 21st than that of the Pharmacy. Isn't the city responsible for keeping their streets clean? It seems like they are in other cities.
No it's most likely the business. If you walk up and down the rest of the street and also look at the the other two eastern corners even next to the dumpster next to Blue Moon is regularly more clean than Silver Dollar and Pharmacy Cafe on the western corners. Horrible try on trying to blame the customers of the neighborhood dude.
The truth you have too much time on your hand I sugest that the best way to get your point across is to go and start claening up that would give you the upper hand and shows that you have good intentios but I don't think you do you are just a CRY BABY
Why should the customer or for that matter disgusted potential customers that are also living and or working in the neighborhood clean up after someone else who is a disgusting sloppy pig of a business owner with multiple complaints. I don't think that telling people the "customers/peop le he wants to take their hard earned cash from" to clean up his "the messy business owners'" mess is the right marketing pitch to earn new business opportunities. That's essentially telling people in the neighborhood I'm going to charge you 5 bucks for whatever and then tax you as an unpaid employee to take out my garbage for me so that I don't have to do it. Well fuck that. I'm not working off the clock for a business that hasn't even earned me as a customer yet by not being a responsible neighbor first. I'll be more than happy to see an irresponsible neighbor who blames the neighborhood it chose to operate in because it saw potentiantal fail when it doesn't be responsible.

Surprisingly (or perhaps not!) the pharmacy cafe has been quite tidy as of late. The construction mess is still there, but the litter has been looking pretty good.

I must remain anonymous, and I no longer have a connection to the Old Pharm, so here is an insider review: No Sink in Kitchen & other fun facts If you are adventurist enough to dine at the Nob Hill Old Pharmacy Cafe- here is a rule of thumb-if you think something tastes funny or is off then for God's sake spit it out! and do not swallow!!! If you are wondering- YES!- I do have inside knowledge, but what I am stating is fact- and here is one for everyone- there is no sink in the kitchen (or lighting) so it is very hard for employees to wash their hands- if you want to build up your immune system then order a burger and and salad and watch through the window as the cook handles raw meat then sticks his hand in the leafy greens!!! Not joking or exaggerating. There really is a window into the kitchen and really no sink , so just take a look! Also take a look at the floor and try to count the number of french fries littered all over the place. Maybe once a day they spot sweep the restaurant, but they do not even own a mop- again inside info. So when it looks empty there are reasons why only a few people are there. All in all though it is a great place to chill at because it is always dead. Even if it is a busy Friday or Saturday night the place is empty and spacious- so it maybe the best place in NW Portland to bring a laptop. You can usually have a booth all to yourself.

Sounds terrible Apothecary! I just checked their health inspection records... they did pretty well in Feb (92/100) but back in September they scored a 74/100 which is quite abysmal. Check the inspections yourself here: http://www2.co. multnomah.or.us /Health/mchealt hinspect/ListSe arch.aspx?id=26 009162

Good to know!
By the way if you want to report concerns about a place then email: FoodSafety@co.m ultnomah.or.us <FoodSafety@ co.multnomah.or .us>
Wow first and mostly you all seem like a bunch of tools. This,"truth", obviously has a personal issue with the owner of the above businesses spoken of. I don't doubt that it's a friend of good ol' Ryerson, the neighborhood schlub that nobody likes. That old fart is the clown of the community. You really think your neighborhood is that great? It's filled with homeless people, drug fiends and faggots, and here you are whining about store fronts I completely understand that more responsibility is expected of local business owners in maintaining store fronts and property, but Apothecary...yo ur really kinda pathetic. I'll hang you up on your "inside info" any day. Keep up the good work kids, lets keep our neighborhood clean! Truth is, Truth loves the cock....inside information. Good deal on the inspection scores you fuck, you truly are a herb.
I like this article. Thanks for sharing.
