Obama was in town today for a rally at Waterfront Park that ended up drawing 75,000 people according to the Portland Fire and Police. This includes 60,000 inside of the park, past the strict security, and 15,000 outside the park watching and listening on the streets and against the barricades. I was one of those who didn't quite make it in, as I walked in a long line that stretched at least 20 blocks.

The event was in the bowl at the Waterfront, near Columbia & Naito. This is where I originally headed, at 12:30 when the doors opened, but it became clear there was a ridiculously long line, so I started following the line uptown. It snaked on Columbia, west 3 blocks to 4th, north a block to jefferson, east a block to 3rd, north 2 blocks to Salmon, west 4 blocks to broadway, north 1 block to taylor, south one block back (on the other side of the street) back to Salmon, west 2 blocks to 9th, then 8 more blocks south to montgomery. That's 23 blocks. Unquestionably the longest line I have ever waited in. We then had to wait in this line, until it made it all the way back. It was quite a sight walking up to the end of the line, having absolutely no idea that it would be 23 blocks. I really thought it would be 1 or 2 or 3 or 9 or anything less than 23. Anyway, it was fun walking the line and talking with all the people who were all very incredibly patient and excited to be there, even if they didn't think they would get to see Obama.

Along the way we encountered dozens of people selling T-Shirts and Buttons and handing out flyers for political supporters. There was a surprising lack of people trying to sell water or ice cream, although they did show up near the gates of the event. I got to shake Senate candidate Steve Novick's hand and met a lot of cool people along the way. I stood in line with some people from Mississippi and California who were very excited to see Obama.

I ended up listening to most of the speech from afar, packed like a sardine amongst a crowd behind a barricade, somewhere near the supposed "entrance", which I never saw. From what I heard from others and the bits that I heard live from Obama, the speech was pretty standard stump speech stuff, but quite good nonetheless. According to the NY Times , Obama started the speech by saying “Wow! Wow! Wow!” It is “fair to say this is the most spectacular setting for the most spectacular crowd” of his campaign, he told the crowd.

The scene was amazing and quite crazy. People as far as the eye could see, a beautiful sunny day, lots of boats and kayaks floating about in the Willamette.

Here is a round up of the media coverage so far. No full video yet, but I'm sure that will come later.

I'm from Iowa and am surprised at how many people would turn out for a rally.... Does this mean that he has the state sewed up????

Portland is full of homosexuals. It's like 50% gay. So, it makes sense that they all showed up to support one of their own.

Portland is diverse, has an intelligent populace of which you are obvisiously not one. Your are misinformed, and perhaps should research your facts, hopefully your are not voting this year!!!!!

I saw a van from CNN there, and heard from others that CNN broadcast most of this speech, however they didn't show the crowd at all. Also, while this rally and the size of it are top stories on lots of political websites, there is absolutely no mention of it on the front page of http://www.cnn.  com .

AROUND THE COUNTRY, WE ALL ARE VERY CONCERN, AND WORRY ABOUT BARRACK HUSSEIM OBAMA TO WIN THE NOMINATION, AND BE OUR PRESIDENT, BECAUSE HE IS A MUSLIM, AND HE MAY BRING THE TERRORIST TO OUR COUNTRY. THINK ABOUT!!!!, AMERICA,!!!! IT WILL BE A TRAGERY IF THIS GUY GETS TO THE WHITE HOUSE. HIS WIFE IS A RACIST, AND DOES NOT LOVE AMERICA, BECAUSE SHE IS NOT PROUD OF OUR BEAUTIFUL, AND POWERFUL COUNTRY. REMEMBER THAT OBAMA WAS LISTENING TO HIS PASTOR FOR 20 YEARS, TIME ENOUGH TO LEARN, AND KEEP THAT IN HIS MIND.

I'LL VOTE FOR MCCAIN, IF OBAMA WINS. HE DOES NOT HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE TO RULL THIS COUNRY, HE IS A FRESHMAN. MCCAIN IS A VERY EXPERIENCE PERSON, AND HE CAN HELP TO BRING THIS COUNTRY BACK. EVEN HILLARY WILL BE MUCH BETTER THAN BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA.

"Topo" must be retarded if he thinks Barack is both a muslim AND has been listening to his "pastor." uh huh, since when do muslims have pastors? People--please do some reading and try getting your news from somewhere other than Fox. Obama loves America and you won't pull him down with ridiculous smears--it hasn't worked. McCain doesn't have any new ideas beyond continuing George Bush's failing strategies. He is indebted to lobbyists--noti  ce the five that have had to drop from his campaign staff just this past week?

it's funny how ignorant people in America are. Sad really. Hopefully there are more smart, open minded people than stupid ignorant, and Obama will be voted President.

"Anonymous Oregonian" and "Topo", you're 100% moron.

I was at the rally in Portland yesterday. It was great to see so many people united together. The only gay person I saw was mayoral candidate Sam Adams. Guess what, I don't care if he's gay. I am an educated and tolerant person. I actually vote for people based upon there policies on say education, foreign relations, health care, and campaign finance, you know, things that actually matter. I hope that the two of you don't really believe what you write and that your just trying to get a rise out of people, but if you are serious, you are more of a threat to this county that Osama bin Ladin will ever be.

DOES TOPO EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH? MAYBE YOU NEED TO LEARN A FEW THINGS LIKE WRITING AND READING BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO POST YOUR OPINION ON WHO OR WHO SHOULDN'T BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

I was at this rally. The inspiration, unity, and positivity is sound proof that Barack Obama has what it takes to put our beloved country back on track. To all the misguided, misinformed, judgeMENTAL people who think he is not the great leader that he actually is: Just watch his delegate count on 05/20/08. CHANGE is coming!
