I finally got to watch the long-awaited, much-anticipate  d Pan's Labyrinth last night. It was everything i expected and more- more grown-up and gruesome that is. Pan's is set in Francisco Franco's Spain- the era of the Spanish Civil War when thousands of people were brutally executed because they actually were or were suspected of being communist, treasonous, anarchist, or even athiest (wiki). A young girl named Ofelia travels with her pregnant mother to join her new "father", Captain Vidal. It's immediately clear that the Captain is one such monster bent on executing anyone who is against him (and "Franco's Spain"). In order to escape her new horrifying reality, Ofelia runs into the woods after a fairy and happens upon a labyrinth where she discovers a faun. The faun informs her that she is indeed not mortal and is really the lost princess of the underworld- and to return, she must accomplish three tasks. Her adventures are dark, horrifying, fantastically beautiful, and suspenseful- in both the real and magical world. And in the end she proves that magic does exist.

Obviously, the war today is totally different- different technology, weapons, ideologies, cultures, etc. However, the movie was kind of an abrupty reminder of how brutal war actually is. Sometimes, i feel so far removed and desensitized that when i hear of soldiers and civilians dying overseas, i can hardly imagine it. But the brutality in the movie was kind of a wake-up call- like yea there's a war going on and there are people dying. I guess i don't really have a point- except that maybe we get a little too complacent and immune sometimes.

I just got out of 20th century history and today we talked about the Spanish Civil War as a prelude to the fascist movement in world war 2, of course in Pan's the resistance fighters we see battling the Nationalist, is taking place years after the civil war ended. But the director Del Toro made another movie back in 2001 called "The Devils Backbone", that actually deals with the civil war (which was 36-39). Anyways did you realize that the American Congress (and FDR) and many of the citizenry were for the Nationalist uprising (Franco's rebellion) and denied aid and help to the Republicans who legally won control of Spain through a democratic election! Franco's nationalist armies were also aided by Hitler and Mussolini, Germany used the civil war as a testing ground for new warfare technology, in the end the resistance fighters/loyali  st would be defeated and then systematically executed. A prelude to the terrors of ww2/mass executions. Its sad the fascist Franco regime won, thanks to the American isolationist attitude at the time, we stood by and watched the massacres unfold. (although 3,000 volunteer Leftist-America  ns traveled to Spain to fight for the Republicans/Pop  ular Front, what a side story this is!) Truly fascinating and alarming history... that many choose to forget.
