Don't try to use a tripod in Pionee Square without a permit... it's illegal because it's a hazard or something stupid like that. You can go to the Pioneer Courthouse Square Administrative Office to apply for a permit to use one at 715 SW Morrison St., Suite 702, Portland, OR 97205, but it costs over $50 just to apply and it takes time for them to process your application. The police will come up and stop you if you do use a tripod. Also watch out for the hobos... pioneer square is a popular hangout.

hmm, it's a hazard? that is stupid. and $50? That's ridiculous too. so if the police come and stop you, do they just stop you or fine you? I've used a tripod there before without knowing about this rule... but i think i'd just rather risk getting "stopped" by the police than pay $50!
