From what I've been hearing is that it is legal. However, What I'm more concerned with is for how long there permitted to stay there? I've walked past a few here and there near where I live that were there for nearly two weeks before being moved taking up valuable parking spaces when since they have pallets underneath them couldn't they be placed on the sidewalk with a no parking on day of pick up sign of some sort on them? That would be much better than making an all ready frustrating parking situation worse with these pods. Plus at least on the side streets where residents live most sidewalks are wide enough where cyclists and pedestrians can go around these pod storage units instead of them taking up half a parking space or more.

Check out the front page (A1 and A16) of the Oregonian of Sunday Sept. 2nd. Or online at http://www.oreg onlive.com/news /oregonian/inde x.ssf?/base/new s/1188692713378 50.xml&coll=7
I am too tired to give the gist of aforementioned article.
They are better than the parked, multi-ton debris dumpsters that jut out into traffic. (I have used them myself, but in my driveway.)

Sidewalks? no way! I'd much rather have a parking spot wasted than any kind of obstrution in the sidewalk (especially downtown). Either way, it's free rent for personal property, whether it's a car or a storage unit. Parking spots are the cheapest real estate in the city. Anyone can get a spot blocked off for special usage with a fairly inexpensive permit, and in my neighborhood the parking is free everywhere, with no time limits. I think we could stand to charge more for commercial permits and things like these storage boxes.

what I found interesting was that that pod that I took a picture of was in my part of the neighborhood that does have time limit spaces and requires zone resident parking permits for longer parking. So you think they have a permit to park their pod? I'm really curious as to how meter maids handle this

The article linked to above says this:
"Portland requires a $66 permit to put a PODS unit in the public right of way. It's good for 14 days, and little enforcement action has been needed so far, said Ramon Corona, the city's parking-control manager."
